GMP Secures Organizing Victory
The GMP International Union successfully organized workers at Hanson Pipe and Precast in Richmond Virginia recently. This victory marked the third plant of Hanson that the GMP represents.
Fifty-six percent of the workforce voted to allow the GMP International Union to be their chosen representatives.
Hours of work and seniority were two of the major issues that led to workers at Hanson seeking the GMP to be their representative. The newly organized workforce recognized a collective bargaining agreement could help alleviate these issues.
Hanson Pipe and Products produces pre-cast structural concrete for roads and bridges. They are the largest manufacturer of concrete products in North America. Hanson has more than 150 facilities throughout the U.S and Canada.
Contract negotiations are now underway to obtain the first contract for the newly organized workers at Hanson Pipe and Product. Hanson workers have chosen their bargaining committee to work with GMP Representatives to negotiate better wages, benefits and working conditions.
Studies have shown that employees in unionized workplaces are more productive than employees in non-union workplaces, and many GMP unionized employers find an increase in business because of having a unionized workforce.
Since the GMP Organizing Dept. was redesigned late in 2005 by GMP International President John Ryan, the GMP has enjoyed a flurry of interest from workers throughout the U.S and Canada wanting the GMP to be their chosen representative.
The GMP has contracts already established for their members at Hanson facilities in Maryland and Canada. Those contracts have secured better wages, benefits and working conditions for GMP members in those facilities.
The GMP International Union was established in 1842 making it one of the oldest labor unions today. The GMP serves members throughout the United States and Canada, and is always eager to organize workers in virtually any type of workplace.
